Maintenance windows

When Kisenon updates your running computes, how to choose the window, and what your application sees.

Every project has a maintenance window: one or more weekdays plus a start and end time, in UTC. Kisenon uses it to move the project's running computes onto new compute releases — Postgres minor versions, extension updates and security fixes.

What happens during an update

An update is a warm swap. Kisenon starts a replacement compute on the new release, copies the running compute's cache into it, and then switches the endpoint over. The endpoint ID and connection string do not change. Existing connections are closed and reconnect within seconds, and because the cache is kept, queries run at full speed straight afterwards.

Endpoints that are scaled to zero are not updated in a window: they start on the current release the next time they wake.

When updates are scheduled

  • An update is scheduled into your next window that is at least 72 hours away. Org owners and admins get an email 72 hours and 24 hours before it.
  • A release marked as a security release is scheduled with at least 24 hours' notice.
  • From the moment it is scheduled, the endpoint shows Update available · scheduled with the time in the console. While the swap runs it shows Updating….
  • If a swap fails before the switch-over, the endpoint keeps running on its current release and Kisenon retries in the next window.

Choosing the window

  1. Open the project and go to Settings → Maintenance window.
  2. Tick one or more days and choose a start and end time (UTC). The window must be 1 to 8 hours long and may cross midnight.
  3. Click Save window.

The console shows the window in your local time next to the UTC fields. A new project starts with a default assigned window — a one-hour slot Kisenon picks — until you save your own. Only organization owners and admins can change the window.

Updating now

Owners and admins can run an update immediately: on the branch page, click Update now next to the endpoint and confirm. It is the same warm swap as a scheduled one.

Scheduled maintenance

Other planned platform work, such as certificate rotations, is listed under Scheduled maintenances on the project's settings page. Within an hour of a scheduled update, and while it runs, a banner appears on that project's pages.
